PMR

IntelliPower - A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance.

IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise, and vibration.

NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) - Employs PMR technology to achieve even greater areal density.

StableTrac™ - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations. (2 TB models only)

Low power spin-up - WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads.

Advanced power technology - Electronic components deliver best-in-class low power consumption for reduced power requirements and increased reliability.

"Amazon's packaging for Hard Drives is the worst!!!!" 2009-12-23
By Steve Traut (Sun Prairie, WI USA)
Great drives... if they work. I just recieved them and haven't even tried them yet, but I'm so angry about the way they were packaged I just had to say something while I'm still willing to bother to post this review. I will update it they work or if they need to go back.

Just save yourself the headache if you need drives and get them from [...]

Each drive was in a loose single wrap of bubble wrap and a single air cushion. Neither was enough to keep them from flopping around loosely within the smaller box. Then each of those boxes were loosely packaged within a larger box with a couple of air cushions... two of which were popped by the time they made it me. Anyway, they were free to flop around in their own boxes and those boxes were free to flop around inside a larger shipping box.

Great drives... just don't get them from Amazon.

"Western Digital 1 TB Caviar hard drive" 2009-12-23
By Thomas K. Swain (Wilmington, NC USA)
I have had no problems with this product. It is very quiet and retreives data quickly.

Excellent product at a reasonable price.

 "DOA Drive" 2009-12-21
By Demian
Don't work and makes strange noises. Packing was horrible with little cushioning, although I don't think it was damaged during shipping. Not even recognized by the system, unable to run diagnostics.

 "Very quiet drive!" 2009-12-21
By T. Becker (Raleigh, NC USA)
Disclaimer: I've had this drive all of one day, so I'll leave commentary on reliability to others. That said, I've backed up over 100GB of data to it so far and have been very pleased with the performance of the drive and especially the noise level. For background, I'm backing up a couple of Macs to this drive inside a Icy Dock Firewire 800 enclosure using SuperDuper and Time Machine. The drive is extremely quiet, quietest I've ever owned by far, and heat even in my fan-less enclosure has not been a problem. As for speed, I was backing up at a rate of roughly 25MB/s over FW800, which suits my needs and then some. I have not had a WD drive in some time, but after the issues Seagate had with bricking drives via firmware (and even worse, the poor response by their customer support), I decided to give WD a try. So far I'm very pleased with the purchase.

 "Excellent Storage for HTPC" 2009-12-20
By Z. Cherry
I bought one of these for my home theater pc for three main reasons as follows...

It's quiet. Important for a HTPC. I have 4 PCs, and my gaming rig has enough cooling it's practically a wind tunnel. Not quiet. For an HTPC, you want silence for obvious reasons. Minimal moving parts are possible to lessen sound(fanless cooling systems, case heat dispersion via alluminum chassis, SSDs), but realistically for the higher data storage solid states aren't there yet from an economical perspective. Yet.

It has low power consumption. For obvious reasons, this is nice. Honestly the green many people talk about isn't my main concern. The green in my pocket is. If it saves $2 a month for a year, that's $24 dollars a year savings my other drives didn't give me. Maybe my PSU will last longer because of it as well. It isn't a speed demon, but it doesn't have to be. It holds my media, and it isn't there for gaming.

It has enough storage for the system I'm installing it in. 1TB is enough for what I'm using it for. When I don't want to access another PC through the network, what I want is usually there. Lossless audio and other high bitrate back ups take up a lot of space. If you've ever backed up a vinyl collection, you know what I mean.

If those are the main needs for your system, then it's only $85 or so right now. I feel it was a good purchase.

As a side note for new PC users--if this is the first HDD you are adding to an already existing system, remember it's just the drive. Buy a SATA or SATA II cable if you don't have an extra one lying around. And don't forget to set it all up in Disk Management after installing it in your box(you won't see it in My Computer as no partitions are set on most OEM drives).
