Purchased the Buffalo LS-W2.0TGL/R1 based on other reviews here on Amazon. The unit installed and operates exactly as described by Buffalo. Installation is simple: insert the disk; follow the instructions; start using the LinkStation. I installed mine under Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit operating system. I bought the 2 TB model to have the redundancy of two disks operating in Raid 1 configuration. I use the Buffalo strictly for backing up my computers (4) in the office. With Raid 1 it would take a total NUKE job for me to lose my backups. I use Acronis True Image on each of the four machines and have a separate directory on the Buffalo for each. So far the product has been perfect.

Overall, this device does what it is supposed to do: stores files on the network. It seems a little slow and the web interface is not great. The included backup software doesn't work very well on my home network and reports random errors for no obvious reason. This device is definitely not for the novice user or the user that wants a quick simple setup.
Is it working fine after a little work? Yes.
Would I buy this again? Probably not.

This RAID1 server fits my needs 100%. Large 2TB capacity (1TB with RAID 1 mirror setup, which is how I set it up) and fast serves over my network. Does not come setup in RAID1, which it should. Some minor noise when in use. The software that comes with the NAS (other than to find the IP address) is useless. Don't even bother with it (its not Vista compatible!). I don't use the backup software either (Mimeo). Some items were initially difficult to set-up (web access, folder settings, etc), but once I called BuffaloTech, I was on the right track (they are very helpful).
I would highly recommend this NAS and give it 5 stars.

Excellent system. Easy set up for both computer use and for interface with a Sonos music system. Would purchase again... no issues after 1 month.

I purchased five of these Network Attached Storage (NAS) units over a one month period of time. I had four locations to install them and wanted to wait until all of them had been in service for at least four weeks before writing a review.
First impressions: The unit is compact and comes packed with a network cable, a power cable (generic, so you can pick one up anywhere if you lose yours) and manual/CD. Initial setup requires that you install Buffalo's proprietary software called "NAS Navigator". Once you have installed the software, you can attach a network cable to the NAS unit and power it on. After 2-3 minutes the unit is ready to be scanned by NAS Navigator. Once NAS Navigator finds it, you can assign it an IP address or keep the address it received via DHCP, then you can engage the web based administration.
The web based administrator is very detailed and covers pretty much anything you'd want to cover. The unit has two 500gb drives in it and is configured as RAID 0, thus giving you 1 tb of capacity. I wanted to use RAID 1 (mirror) and this process took about 30 minutes to complete. Remember, changing from Raid 0 to Raid 1 will erase all data, so do this before using the device for backup unless you're ready to lose everything on it.
There's provision for it to send an e-mail for any alerts. I was able to get 3 of the 4 units to send e-mails nightly. One unit would not take.
It does allow for adding groups for share access, although members cannot be added to the groups. It will not work with Active Directory or any other Windows based security. Unlimited users can be added but the administator will have to select their user name and password and they (the user) cannot change it unless they are given access to the NAS via the admin user account. Users cannot be added to the administrator group.
I am using Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery on servers attached to this unit and doing a full backup nightly with a max of 2 backups kept on the NAS. If you are deleting backup jobs, or any type of jobs, make sure you disengage the Recycle Bin feature on this device or you will run out of space very quickly if your deleted items add up to 500 gb.
One thing that was very important to me was tech support. One of the four units failed to respond four weeks after install (beyond the 30 day Amazon return period). I contacted tech support on a Saturday afternoon and was able to speak to a tech within five minutes. He had me go through a lengthy battery of tests (over one hour's worth) in order to get the unit to respond, to no avail. I was given an RMA and had to send the unit back at my expense. I received a replacement unit within 10 days, which was a refurbished unit. It has worked fine. So tech support gets a positive review for being both available on a weekend and being located in the United States.
I'm not giving the units five stars because of the following: lack of Windows authentication capability; manual and knowledge base of manufacturer are poor regarding solving certain problems (e-mail alerts not working); 1 out of 5 units failed within the first 90 days.
Again, for the money, it is a tremendous buy and well worth it.
