The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.
Move files or other content with either USB 2.0/eSATA/FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, and 3Gb/sec for eSATA, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.
The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. The most important function of a disk drive is to store information, then make it available when you want it. This one doesn't. I'm on my second failed drive. The quality is so bad, I guess you are supposed to feel good if Seagate will replace it every time it fails. I'd prefer one that never failed.
I'm not going to send it back for replacement because I don't need another paper weight.
Since I don't know enough to know why it failed, I'm willing to paint with a broad brush and say I will avoid Seagate products from now on.
Seagate also owns Maxtor, and I have a dead Maxtor drive next to my now-dead Seagate drive. I think we can see their poor track record of quality.

Stay away from Freeagent pro. I, like others, have constant problems with my pc not recognizing it half the time. I have to pull plug in and out, press restart (it has a press switch, difficult to use) and try numerous other things to get it to work. In fact, after writing this I'm throwing it in the trash and sticking with Mybook drives which as of today have given me no trouble.

I was jumping on here to see if it was still available, and it appears there is now a newer model. However, I must say I was surprised to see some negative reviews. All I can say is that I bought this in July 2008, and it has been on almost 24/7 for the year. I bought my iMac shortly before this. I store over 30,000 songs on my Mac, and had over 200 movies. It works perfectly with Time Machine and never had one issue or worry. I had an old Iomega 500gb drive that I use as a second backup now. I moved all my movies on to that and off my Mac. But those files are still on my Seagate, and the Seagate is actually backing up the backup. Lastly, I do a lot of video projects with iMovie and Final Cut, and have the project directory save a backup directly to the Seagate. If for any reason the Seagate fails, I'm still covered, but I have nothing but full confidence with this drive. I will actually consider getting the new version now, and simply replace my Iomega and rotate. The new 1.5tb version is a great buy if it's as good as this one!

I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Pro to backup my laptop. After using it, and the backup software that came with it, for about a month, and getting daily "backup succeeded" messages, I decided to test if I could restore a file. I couldn't. I ran the diagnostic that came with the drive and it said the drive had failed and needed to be returned to Seagate. I also verified that the file really wasn't on the FreeAgent disk (despite the "backup succeeded" messages), although most of my laptop files were there.
I phoned Seagate, and they told me to download their more elaborate "SeaTools" diagnostic, which they said could repair the disk. I ran SeaTools, but all the tests passed, while the original test continued to report a failure. So, I returned the disk to Seagate.
I received a second drive from Seagate. Exactly the same thing happened, namely, I ran it for a month, tried a restore which failed, and ran the diagnostic, which failed. I returned the second disk.
I received a third drive from Seagate. This time, I ran the diagnostic on the disk before doing anything else. It said the disk had failed and needed to be returned. Then I tried it on another computer and, again, the diagnostic reported a failure. Again, SeaTools did not help. I give up, I want my money back.
