"Won't last!!" 2009-09-25By

I have owned a number of Maxtor drives in the past and outgrown all of them. This one is a complete dud!
This drive has some great features: Raid, and triple interface USB 2.0, Firewire 400 & 800.
Shortly after I purchased this, bad reviews about it's reliability started showing up online. I warned my wife to use it only for her video files- things that she could recover from the original tapes. Fortunately, that was all she lost when the drive died after just a couple months of use. When these die, the Raid protection does you no good, because the whole thing dies.
It was still under warranty, and presumably because these drives are so unreliable Maxtor sent me a 2tb Seagate drive as a replacement. I am somewhat pleased to get a drive that doesn't have such a terrible track record, but the replacement Seagate has no Raid capability, and no Firewire 800. (Seagate now owns Maxtor, I believe.) I'll be saving my money for a Drobo or similar device in the future.

I have owned many Maxtor drives over the years... the years before Seagate acquired the company. The few times I experienced a problem, the old Maxtor company sent me a new drive and all was well.
EVERY Maxtor drive I have owned since Seagate took over has failed within months of purchase.
A 500 gb OneTouch drive has been replaced 3 times.
A 1TB OneTouch had now also died for the 3rd time.
Your warranty is from the date of original purchase... not from each replacement date.
So they keep sending you bad drives until your warranty is up.
And you get to pay the postage too.
The replacement drives are not new drives.
They are REBUILT drives.
In other words... drives which have already failed once.
If they merely repaired your drive and returned it, at least you would know it's history.
This spring I bought two 1TB drives from an online Mac dealer, and did not notice the the drives within the enclosures were Seagates.
One died within a month of purchase and has been replaced.
The other one is still working so far.

Guys, I couldn't believe it died. Search for troubleshooting at maxtor's site, total crap. Didn't try support after reading reviews. Can't action my warranty, I'm overseas.
Now facing dissassembly and trying to recover data from it. For those of you who are not practical, bet on taking the individual disks inside onto external cases - you'll most probably be able to recover data, provided you've set NO RAID or RAID 1 - all the best

We used two of these drives a primary project storage for our production group. Both drives failed and customer support was well, poor at best. The only positive I can say is that we are glad we have a double redundant backup of all our files. It has saved us twice now.

I bought this drive because it had Firewire 800 support, configured for RAID, was Mac Formatted, and had a generous 2TB of storage... all for under $200. What's not to like? Well, I found out...
2 weeks after putting 1TB of home videos on it (thankfully this was only a BACKUP copy), it stopped responding. All it would do is "click, click, click" when powered on. It was totally dead. I was able to take it back to the store and return it, and like a dumba** I exchanged it for a new one. 2 days later, the replacement also went completely dead (not even a "click" this time!).
Needless to say I am not a happy camper. This is the single worst technology product I have ever purchased. Had I read the reviews here first and not gone for the cheapest storage I could find, I would have avoided this drive like the plague. The earliest reviews of this product are THREE YEARS old, and uniformly bad. I can't believe such an awful product is still allowed to be sold to the unwitting public.
AVOID THIS DRIVE AT ALL COSTS. I'm never going to buy a Maxtor product again.
